'This Holmes puppet saved my life!'-- Helen Stonor

SHERLOCK HOLMES (January 6, 1854 - ?)
Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in print in 1887 in A Study in Scarlett. The idea of the detective story was in its infancy and Sherlock Holmes was immediately popular, helping to unleash a passion for mystery and detective stories. Doyle loosely modelled the character of Holmes on Joseph Bell, one of his lecturers at Edinburgh, who was a pioneer in the new science of forensics.
