ROSA PARKS
(February 4, 1913 - October 24, 2005)
Most historians date the start of the modern civil rights movement to December 1, 1955, when Rosa Louise McCauley Parks, a seasoned activist and secretary for the NAACP, refused to give up her seat (to a white man) on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her ensuing arrest led to a 381-day bus boycott that resulted in the desegregation of public transportation in the South and the rise of local preacher Martin Luther King, Jr. to international prominence. Parks remained an activist to the end of her life.
