ANTON PAVLOVICH CHEKHOV
(January 29 1860 - July 12, 1904)
Russia's greatest dramatist, Chekhov began his career as a writer because he needed the money. As a short story writer he was phenomenally fast - he could compose a story while visiting a newspaper office. Chekhov preferred inconclusive endings, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them. He was also a physician, which he considered his principal profession.
