RALPH WALDO EMERSON
(May 25, 1803 -April 27, 1882)
Emerson spent a sheltered childhood in Boston, and then following in his minister father's footsteps, became a student at Harvard Divinity School. Upon assuming the pulpit however, he began to doubt many of the most commonly-held Christian beliefs. Touring several European cities, Emerson returned to the States as a 'naturalist' and later became the founder of the American Transcendental movement. Along the way, with colleagues Thoreau and Hawthorne, he wrote and lectured on the subjects of nature and individuality.
