Newton "Newt" Leroy McPherson took the last name Gingrich from his adopted father. He became an early reader when his family purchased an Encyclopedia Americana. Math was also a favorite subject; wife #1 (of three) was his high school geometry teacher. In 1978 Newt won a seat in Congress. As the leading architect of the "Contract with America" he led the House Republicans to victory in the 1994 election and became Speaker of the House. After facing ethics charges, Gingrich relinquished his seat in 1998. Still seeking the limelight, Gingrich has written or co-written 23 books of non-fiction and historical fiction.
