LEON TROTSKY
(November 7, 1879 - August 21, 1940)
Born Lev Davidovich Bronstein, Trotsky was the son of an illiterate farmer. As the Russian Revolution's most brilliant polemicist, Trotsky engineered the Bolshevik seizure of power in October 1917. After Lenin's death, he was outmaneuvered by Joseph Stalin, forced into exile and ultimately assassinated in Mexico by an ice pick-wielding Communist, a likely agent of Stalin.
