HENRY DAVID THOREAU
(July 12, 1817 - May 6, 1862)
Philosopher, naturalist, abolitionist, and advocate of civil disobedience, Thoreau was a younger member of the transcendentalist group that flourished in mid-19th-century New England. In 'Walden, or Life in the Woods,' he related the philosophical observations he made while living alone in a self-built cabin at Walden Pond, near Concord, Massachusetts.
