GEORGE ORWELL
(June 25, 1903 - January 21, 1950)
Author and journalist, Orwell attended Eton as a young man, and then, without the means of attending university, traveled to Burma to join the Imperial Police. He later spent time in Paris with the hopes of becoming a writer, but found himself 'Down and Out.' A tour of duty with the BBC, travel and involvement with various socialist causes preceded his final works: the anti-Stalinist allegory 'Animal Farm' and the frightening totalitarian society of 'Nineteen Eighty-Four.'
