What does this shirt represent?

The picture is a depiction of Euclid's 5th postulate, which is equivalent to the statement "given a line and a point not on that line, there's only one line you can draw through the point (and lying in the same plane as the other line) so that it never crosses the other line". People thought it was just 'true' (it seems so!) and provable from the first 4 axioms of geometry for a long long time, but could never prove it--because it's not. You can negate the 5th postulate and get perfectly good other weird geometries (spherical, hyperbolic). But once you throw in the 5th you get 'Euclidean' geometry, which is the kind of geometry everyone is used to. Anyway the picture shows that if the angles alpha and beta pictured sum to less than pi radians (180 degrees), then those two lines will eventually cross somewhere on the same side as the two angles.

Title: Cool shirt, good quality

My daughter LOVED this shirt and got rave reviews on it at school. It's already been washed and worn several times and stands up to daily use perfectly. An excellent product!

Title: Here\'s looking at an explanation
Jun 20, 2012
For those who don't get it, it is Euclid's Fifth Postulate, the Parallel postulate.

Quoting: "If a line segment intersects two straight lines forming two interior angles on the same side that sum to less than two right angles, then the two lines, if extended indefinitely, meet on that side on which the angles sum to less than two right angles."

Title: Great shirt
My scientist daughter loves nerdy shirts, and it was actually small enough for her petite frame.

Title: Euclid
Gift was well received. Its new owner had to explain it to his wife, which is perfect!

Title: Nerdy and Hip
This is a must for film buffs and science/math geeks alike. Sadly, I had to explain the film reference to my students. They mean it when they say this shirt runs small. I bought a large - it fits like a medium.

Title: Euclidean matters
The shirt, bought large enough to fit over other winter garb, has been the source of lots of attention, puzzlement on the part of beholders, and occasionally a degree of understanding and why it reminded them of Bogart. Will make a fine night shirt for me when the novelty wears off. I'm very happy with the product.
